Description
The “low intensity” management practices of catfish culture used prior to the 1980’s led to good pond water quality and lower overall stress, and thus resulted in less disease problems. As technological innovation and farming practices shifted towards higher stocking densities to increase yields, the production practices led to the emergence of infectious disease as the primary limiting factor in catfish production and many millions of dollars in direct fish losses each year. This lecture will focus on the primary bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral diseases that affect catfish farming and treatments the veterinarian may utilize to curb a disease outbreak.
