There are a number of fish species used in scientific research with the zebrafish, Japanese medaka and fathead minnow being the most common. Veterinarians in charge of the health of laboratory fish may oversee a single vivarium with a single fish species, multiple fish species within multiple vivariums or possibly even multiple aquaculture systems or ponds that house single or multiple fish species. In the laboratory, veterinarians are expected to investigate incidents of morbidity and mortality, and changes in fish behavior, production and response to research protocols. It is also the veterinarian’s responsibility to ensure researchers are compliant with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and funding-agency requirements. This lecture will focus on the veterinarian’s role in the laboratory setting and provide a basic explanation of laboratory fish husbandry, which will allow the veterinarian to better assist researchers.
