Description
The United States is far behind the rest of the world in its support and promotion of marine aquaculture despite having the world’s second largest exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and a seafood demand that has made the US the world’s leading importer of seafood resulting in a billion trade deficit. Between 70 – 90% of the seafood consumed in the US is imported. Expansion of commercial US marine finfish aquaculture would contribute to the US seafood supply, complement wild fisheries and support local coastal communities. This lecture will provide the veterinarians a basic overview of hatchery production, feed types and grow-out systems of marine aquaculture in order to better prepare them to assist marine aquaculture farms. Additionally, it will review a few finfish species with the potential to impact US marine aquaculture expansion.
