Description
Part A: Caregivers of cats, dogs, and children with epilepsy have a proven heavy caregiver burden and psychosocial dysfunction (depression, anxiety, lower quality of life scores). Furthermore, parents of epileptic children experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Partial PTSD rates of about 10% and 40% respectively, from the experience of their child’s epilepsy. This lecture will review the burden caregivers are under, and by extension the veterinary team, and promote potential solutions to help the caregivers of canine epilepsy patients.
Part B: When to treat recurrent seizure and with what medication is a common challenge for the veterinary practitioner. Often epilepsy patients are easily controlled with any number of anti-seizure medications, however about 30% can be refractory to treatment. Cluster seizure is common in this population and is associated with higher mortality. Drug interactions will be considered, for example when Phenobarbital and Zonisamide are given together, the Phenobarbital serum concentration rises while the Zonisamide concentration drops compared to monotherapy. Attendees will gain an improved understanding of the benefits, tradeoffs, important interactions, and dosing regiments of the four common anti-seizure medications.
Objective: Attendees will gain an understanding of caregiver burden and psychosocial consequences in canine and feline epilepsy and potential tools to support caregivers. The attendee will gain an understanding of when and how to treat epilepsy in both dogs and cats. They will gain an understanding of important interactions between epilepsy drugs and effective dosing and monitoring strategies.
