Description
TVTs may be misdiagnosed as other urogenital conditions, due to not being noticed during an initial exam and excessive licking contributing to risk of bacteriuria. Despite the prevalence in many areas, TVT is considered rare in North America, so animal shelters may not have considered case management. When encountered recently at a municipal shelter in Southern California there was not an established protocol and leadership were hesitant to proceed with treatment. Common concerns with treatment of TVT include the animal’s length of stay and staff safety with handling chemotherapy. However, treatment and case management protocols can be developed even in facilities with limited resources while keeping staff safe. Additionally, the diagnosis of TVT allows shelter staff to prevent the spread of this cancer by limiting interactions between dogs in the shelter and by providing treatment prior to adoption into the community.
