This workshop will facilitate a discussion regarding the scope and identity of shelter medicine and community medicine fields, specifically in the context of accessible care. The intention is for this workshop to be an opportunity for participants and organizers to discuss how to approach this challenge for the field’s future identity and contribute to a future publication on the state of community and shelter medicine practice. Results from a recent Association of Shelter Veterinarians survey will be shared at the beginning of the first session. Small groups will then work on sharing and answering directed questions regarding how we describe ourselves and envision these fields moving forward. Participants will take a brief pre-survey and post-survey to capture individual as well as group opinions to be reported in the commentary at a later time, which should also help capture different perspectives that may be difficult to ascertain in a larger group.
