Description
Surgical sterilization can be performed in dogs of any age without gonad removal. Hysterectomies in dogs were first reported in the veterinary literature more than 50 years ago and most veterinary surgery textbooks include instructions on how to perform vasectomies in dogs. For the past 20 years, the American Veterinary Medical Association has recognized gonad sparing surgeries as an option for permanently sterilizing dogs. The techniques as well as the indications and health risks of gonad sparing sterilization surgeries will be presented.
