This presentation will focus on the clinically relevant aspects of equine wound healing, with a particular emphasis on managing open and chronic wounds. Since primary intention healing is rare in horses, most wounds heal by second intention and require open wound management. We will explore a range of management strategies for these wounds, including foundational principles of basic wound care. In addition to addressing standard techniques, we will also cover the management of more complicated cases, such as chronic or infected wounds and those involving antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Treatment approaches will include a discussion of both traditional wound therapies and more advanced, non-traditional methods to provide veterinarians with a comprehensive toolkit for wound management. By understanding these principles, veterinarians will be better equipped to handle the complexities of equine wound healing and improve clinical outcomes.
