Name
Pain Recognition and Low-Stress Care in Exotic Companion Mammals
Logan Kopp
Description
This session emphasizes the connection between pain recognition and low-stress handling in exotic species. Participants will develop skills in using validated tools such as the Rabbit Grimace Scale, CANCRS, and the Bristol Pain Scale, and in interpreting subtle behavioral changes in ferrets, rodents, and rabbits. The lecture will also explore approaches to reducing fear and restraint-related stress in clinical settings, including handling techniques, pre-visit pharmaceuticals, and environmental adjustments. Attendees will leave with practical methods to improve patient welfare and increase diagnostic accuracy by minimizing stress.
