Name
Rabbit Gastrointestinal Syndrome: A Practical Approach for the Emergency Practitioner
Speakers
Description
Rabbit Gastrointestinal Syndrome (RGIS) is a common reason for rabbits to present to the veterinary ER. Due to its multi-factorial causes and wide range of severity, it can be a complex condition to fully diagnose and manage. The objective of this talk is to present current scientific literature and recommendations to empower practitioners who may not have much knowledge or experience with rabbits and encounter these patients in an emergency setting.
This presentation will review the current definition of RGIS, common underlying etiologies and appropriate interventions. There will be a focus on prognostic indicators, identification of life-threatening disease (obstruction, liver lobe torsion, etc.), and when hospitalization should be considered over outpatient care. Procurement and interpretation of diagnostic testing, such as blood work and radiographs, will also be discussed.
Presentation Outline:
1. A brief overview of rabbit GI physiology and pathophysiology of RGIS
2. What does the initial exam tell you?
3. Diagnostics
4. Mainstays of treatment
5. Emergency interventions
6. Outpatient vs Hospitalization
