Name
Long Term Treatment for Persistently Symptomatic E. cuniculi in Six Rabbits
Description
In this session we present 5 cases of rabbits with persistent clinical signs of E. cuniculi, who were kept on panacur long term (>6 months), and report the results of re-testing as well as clinical progression. Additionally, one rabbit who does not tolerate panacur and is maintained on long-term Ponazuril is reported. All testing was performed via the e cuniculi serology panel at UMiami. Testing performed after September 2023 utilizes a more specific IgG and IgM ELISA measuring antibody to a polar tube protein produced during ECUN infection. All patients were given ponazuril or panacur at a dose of 20mg/kg unless specified otherwise. Patients represent both sexes and range in age from 9 months to 8 years. Two patients tested fully negative on serology after about 1 year on panacur, with one patient showing signs of aplastic anemia prompting re-testing. The other four patients remain non-clinical while on treatment and testing has shown decreased but unresolved titers. Of the four positive patients one requires a dose of 40mg/kg panacur SID to maintain non-clinical status, and two have been on panacur for nearly two years. In this case series we will explore the question of long-term panacur including indications, risks and follow up recommendations for our persistently clinical patients.
