It is common for ferrets to present with various symptoms of abnormal stool. There are a myriad of causes and there are a number of diagnostic procedures that can help guide the practitioner to the correct treatment. This master class reviews the various causes of diarrhea in ferrets – including diet, stress, foreign bodies, infectious causes, immune mediated disease and neoplasia. It will highlight the diagnostic tests available – including direct microscopy, fecal float, culture, and PCR testing. It will provide a decision tree for prioritizing testing and will outline various treatment options including anti-parasiticides, antibiotics, steroids, gut soothers, antacids, probiotics and special diets. Other systemic diseases will be described that can present initially with diarrhea. Quarantine procedures for infectious diseases will also be included.
