Name
Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus in Rabbits: Emerging Diagnostics and Surgical Management
Speakers
Description
This lecture covers Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), an emerging and life-threatening cause of acute abdomen in rabbits. Although once considered rare—with only three cases documented in the peer-reviewed literature to date—GDV requires prompt recognition and treatment. This session will review current literature.
Attendees will learn to recognize the clinical triad often reported with GDV: acute hyporexia, severe abdominal pain, and distinctive biochemical abnormalities, including elevated ALT, ALP, and total bilirubin. Diagnostic imaging will be discussed; while Computed Tomography (CT) is the gold standard, we will explore how point-of-care ultrasound can be a more accessible tool for supporting a presumptive diagnosis. Additionally, there will be a focus on surgical management, detailing techniques such as exploratory laparotomy, gastric derotation, and incisional gastropexy to prevent recurrence.
