Name
The art and science of delegation in exotic pet medicine
Description
With the median number of hours worked by veterinarians per work increasing more than 12% between 2019 to 2022, the profession is facing an unprecedented workload. Over half of veterinary practices have vacancies for veterinarians, making efficiency critical to provide care to pets who need it while avoiding burn-out and a suboptimal work/life balance. This presentation will explain the neuroscience behind the difficulties of delegation, with recommendations to override these subconscious hurdles. A step-by-step deep dive into the implementation of delegation will review recommendations that are specific to exotic pet medicine. With each of these recommendations, a thorough list of available training resources (for both veterinarians and support staff) will be provided to assist attendees in following through with these strategies. The goal of this lecture is to provide attendees with not just ‘tips and tricks’ to making their day smoother, but to give them an understanding of why delegation can be so difficult to implement, relevant advice that is exotic pet medicine-specific, and crucial resources for every step of the way.
