Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment in the Modern Exotics Practice - More than Just Prednisolone
Speakers
Description
Cancer treatment in human and veterinary medicine is progressing by leaps and bounds. Our exotic patients are living long enough with improved husbandry that neoplasia of various types is cropping up more often, and owners have the will and the means to properly diagnose and treat the cancer. Small molecule inhibitors are replacing or are being paired with conventional chemotherapy to treat various cancers. We will present cases in which small molecule inhibitors, such as toceranib (Palladia®) and palbociclib (IBRANCE®) were used with some success to treat cancers in ferrets and where treatments other than CHOP resulted in lymphoma remission in ferrets and a peacock. A procedure for the genetic testing of tumors will be presented that can provide guidance on which of the many options for chemotherapy and targeted therapy to choose. Early cancer screening is available with a small blood sample and vaccines from tumor tissue can be made in the clinic and this technique will be demonstrated. Reports of successful treatment of lymphoma, osteosarcoma, and an undifferentiated sarcoma where the tumor vaccine was an integral part of the treatment will be presented.
