Serpentovirus review: Life was easier when we called them nidoviruses
Description
It has been over a decade since the first published reports of serpentoviruses in snakes. First characterized in pythons as divergent members of the order Nidovirales, a large group of positive-sense single-stranded, positive sense RNA viruses, the viruses were referred to as nidoviruses. With increased surveillance and disease investigation, related viruses were identified in more snakes, including boids, colubrids, elapids, and viperids, and also in chelonians and lacertilians, rapidly expanding the group of known reptile Nidovirales, all of which were members of the subfamily Serpentovirinae in the family Tobaniviridae, and are now commonly referred to as serpentoviruses. This talk will review our knowledge of these viruses, including known viral diversity, potential for clinical disease, common signs and lesions, diagnostic testing, and touch on recent findings on potential therapeutic options.
