Many emergency presentations in pet geckos stem not from infectious disease, but from preventable husbandry deficiencies. Veterinary technicians are uniquely positioned to identify these deficiencies during patient intake through focused history-taking and client communication.
This lecture introduces the "Quick Gecko Husbandry Check," a practical five-question assessment designed to help veterinary technicians identify common environmental, nutritional, and husbandry errors before diagnostics begin. Through real-world case examples and evidence-based recommendations, attendees will learn how simple history questions regarding temperature, lighting, nutrition, humidity, and enclosure design can reveal the underlying causes of anorexia, metabolic bone disease, dysecdysis, dehydration, gastrointestinal disease, and other commonly encountered reptile conditions with a focus on leopard geckos and crested geckos or gargoyle geckos.
Participants will leave with a structured intake strategy that can be immediately implemented in both general and emergency practice to improve patient outcomes and strengthen client education.
