Name
Beyond the Bulb: Advanced Reptile Husbandry and Welfare
Description
Reptile ownership has more than doubled over the last decade with an estimated 4.5% of households in the United States owning a pet reptile. As a result, there are more products sold to reptile owners today than there were 10-20 years ago. Companies producing heating and lighting elements, substrates and terrarium décor have recognized that reptile ownership is growing and that captive welfare is important to consumers. This recognition has led to research into species-specific care requirements, advancements in lighting and heating, nutritional considerations and promotion of elevated welfare standards. This masterclass will discuss the latest advancements and research into captive reptile care and welfare. An emphasis will be placed on species-specific heat and light requirements. Common types of terrariums, heating and lighting elements and substrates will be examined. The use of bioactive substrates will also be discussed. Veterinarians and technicians that attend this class will become familiar with these advanced topics and have the confidence to work with clients who are looking for a more advanced approach to the care of their pet reptile. Not included in abstract: This masterclass would preferably be placed following Dr. Doss’ abstract on basic reptile husbandry. The two are supposed to complement one-another, but may attract different audiences, hence why they are separate.
