Name
Substrate Impaction in a Pacman Frog (Ceratophrys sp.)
Description
A 2 year old Pacman frog (Ceratophrys sp.) presented for a distended coelom, straining to defecate, one episode of regurgitation, and anorexia. On initial presentation, a firm, dilated portion of bowel was palpated, but the remainder of exam was unremarkable. Radiographs were taken and were consistent with impaction. Outpatient medical management consisting of soaking and daily lactulose was attempted for 1 week, but failed, and the patient returned for surgical management. A paramedian approach to the coelom was utilized. The entire gastrointestinal tract was evaluated via palpation and visually; a large amount of substrate was found impacting a 1 inch portion of the small intestine. The impaction was removed through two routine enterotomy sites. The patient was sent home and instructed to be kept in a quarantine/hospital tank and rechecked in 6 weeks. At recheck, the patient had recently started eating normally again but had made no attempts to defecate.
