Outcomes and survival times of female bearded dragons undergoing reproductive surgeries: 101 cases
Speakers
Description
The purpose of this presentation is to present findings from a retrospective study assessing outcomes and survival times of female bearded dragons undergoing reproductive surgeries. Medical records from 1,666 female bearded dragons presenting between January 2016 and November 2023 were reviewed from 7 clinics in Australia. Keywords searched included female, bearded dragon, ovariectomy (87.3%), ovariohysterectomy (17.6%), salpingotomy (4.9%) or subdermal follicle removal (1%). A total of 101 cases presented for 113 procedures with an overall prevalence for reproductive surgery of 6%. The 24-hour survival rate across all procedures was 92.3%, the 2 week survival rate was 82%, and the 6 week survival was 73.8%. This study describes the most common reproductive surgical findings in female bearded dragons and the high survival rate after both elective and non-elective surgery. Risk of non-survival was increased in non-nulliparous females, if coelomic effusion was present, and if ectopic ovarian tissue was present, reinforcing the importance of elective reproductive surgery in this species.
