Survey-Based Insights into the Nutrition, Feeding Management, and Environment of Pet Bearded Dragons
Speakers
Description
Over the last decade, bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) have solidified their position as one of the most popular reptile species in the exotic pet world. Despite their popularity, there is limited knowledge regarding their specific nutritional requirements. Current dietary recommendations are largely based on studies involving wild, free-ranging individuals, which may not fully account for the needs of those in captive environments. This gap in knowledge highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the nutrition, feeding management, and environment of pet bearded dragons. The objective of this study was to evaluate the comprehensive nutritional histories, feeding management, and environments of pet bearded dragons. Voluntary, non-incentivized, anonymous, response sampling was utilized to collect data from current pet bearded dragon owners in the form of an online survey. The online survey was self-administered and consisted of closed-ended and open-ended inquires. Given the critical role nutrition plays in the overall health of bearded dragons, understanding current feeding practices of pet owners provides greater insight into educational and commercial opportunities.
