Name
Using Intranasal Naloxone in a Ferret for Suspected Methadone Intoxication
Description

Adult FS Ferret of unknown age presented to GP day clinic for "being in shock" after the other ferret was found decreased. Both ferrets had been roaming in the house. On exam the patient was mentally inappropriate. Her CPs were significantly abnormal and she was trembling. She had mydriasis and all 4 legs were splaying. She did not seem aware of her surroundings. Further questioning revealed that the patient had likely ingested methadone from a source in a bedroom in their house. Naloxone was given intranasal as due to the trembling an IV catheter could not be placed. The patient improved. An IV catheter was placed. A second dose was administered IV. The patient was then given a bolus of IV fluids. She recovered quickly and uneventfully although she did have some minor noise sensitivity.
