A Review on Clinical Management of Diagnosed Cardiovascular Diseases in Pet Syrian Hamsters
Speakers
Description
Current knowledge about cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in pet Syrian hamsters is sparse since they are primarily derived from studies on laboratory-housed hamsters, or adapted from canine and feline medicine rather than clinical cases on pet hamsters. This research is one of the first to review the clinical management of pet Syrian hamsters diagnosed with CVD via cardiac ultrasound. Our review will focus on 11 clinical cases of pet hamsters presented with cardiovascular signs. We will detail their initial clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, treatment approaches, animals’ response to treatment, and mean survival time.
By examining these cases, this study will contribute meaningful insights into the clinical management of cardiovascular conditions in pet Syrian hamsters. This is particularly important given the rising popularity of these animals as pets and the corresponding need for veterinarians to better understand their unique health challenges. These findings will also serve as a foundation for further studies into the diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases in pet hamsters, ultimately filling a critical knowledge gap in exotic mammal medicine.
