Name
Rehabilitation and Non-Chemical Pain Management in Exotic Companion Mammals
Eva Bogner
Description
Rehabilitation is a set of interventions designed to optimize functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions. Many patients can benefit from rehabilitation practice, not just those healing from an injury. Patients healing from surgery, dealing with certain diseases and illnesses, and those experiencing declining function with age also can benefit greatly. Unfortunately, there is limited training during vet school in rehabilitation and non-chemical pain management techniques, especially in exotic companion animals. In addition, our patients have limited opportunities at traditional rehabilitation practice. This presentation will provide new and seasoned practitioners with training to discuss and perform rehabilitation in exotic companion mammals at their hospitals. Discussion topics will include manual manipulation, thermal therapy, photobiomodulation, acupuncture, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), and extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT). In addition, we will cover supportive care that is often needed during rehabilitation, such as preventing bed sores and treating wounds. Throughout the presentation, we will provide evidence- and experience-based tips and techniques for performing rehabilitation and non-chemical pain management options.
