Name
Hamsters 101: Clinical case approaches and surgery
Description
Despite being a common exotic companion mammal pet, hamsters are less frequently seen in clinical practice. Based on their size and temperament, they may provide significant challenges to diagnosis and treatment. While hamsters share some similarities with other myomorph rodents, there are several considerations that need to be made for their anatomy and physiology. They also present with unique disease processes compared to other species, including but not limited to reproductive and integumentary neoplasia. This 2-hour masterclass will be split into two parts- the first hour (by Colin McDermott) will be on the basics of hamster clinical medicine, including a brief review of clinical anatomy and physiology, as well as common diagnostic and treatment approaches to common diseases. Diseases will focus on integumentary, gastrointestinal, and reproductive pathologies. The second hour of the talk (by Shih Chieh Chan) will build upon the basics of the first hour and discuss more advanced diagnostics and treatments, including anesthesia and surgery. A special focus will be on the surgical management of pathologies in hamsters, including ovariohysterectomies and integumentary tumors.
