Retrospective and prospective case series are popular study designs that can be effectively used to describe new conditions, new diagnostic techniques and new treatments. Case series may be of varying quality, depending on how they have been planned and carried out. A good case series can significantly impact the veterinary literature with relatively little financial efforts and often requiring limited ethical oversight compared to experimental studies. However, there are several conditions that must be met for a case series to be considered of higher quality. In the present masterclass, we will identify some of the most important aspects to design and conduct a case series in order to obtain the most from this type of research study.
