Description

Neurological signs are among the most frequently encountered presenting complaints in exotic companion mammals, particularly as their lifespans increase due to advancements in husbandry and veterinary care. Normal neurological findings vary significantly by species and are often influenced by the prey species status of many of these patients. Conducting a comprehensive neurological examination in these patients is challenging, with sedation commonly employed to minimize stress during handling. However, sedation can also alter the neurological state, complicating the assessment. Additionally, distinguishing between neurological and musculoskeletal diseases can be difficult in these species. This presentation will explore the most common presenting neurological complaints, including torticollis, seizures, and paresis, using a case-based approach. An overview of the neurologic examination in exotic companion mammals and development of a differential diagnosis list will be provided. Key conditions such as Encephalitozoonosis, otitis media, toxin exposure, seizures, Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, spinal injury, and viral causes of neurological signs will be discussed, along with their diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis.
