Contrary to historical perceptions there is now considerable evidence suggesting that fish perceive pain. In scenarios where the death of fish is necessary or unavoidable responsible fish veterinarians should strive to accomplish death as rapidly with the minimum amount of pain and distress possible. This lecture will review the American Veterinary Medical Association’s guidelines for the humane euthanasia, slaughter and depopulation of fish.
