Anna-Marie Ruoff, Colorado Exotic Animal Hospital
How can we best provide a “good death” for our patients? Humane euthanasia is a responsibility of veterinarians when a patient no longer has the potential for a good quality of life. However, the topic of death is difficult to discuss, and euthanasia techniques for exotic species are not commonly taught. This presentation will provide both new and seasoned practitioners with training to discuss and perform humane euthanasia in exotic companion mammal, reptile, and amphibian species. We will review the professional and ethical responsibilities of veterinarians regarding euthanasia; discuss anatomy and physiology unique to these species that impact how euthanasia is performed; review AVMA guidelines for these species; and discuss how to honor the human-animal bond through euthanasia. We will guide attendees through five steps of euthanasia in these species: preparation and informed consent; sedation, anesthesia, or loss of consciousness; induction of death; verification of death; and care of remains. In addition, we will provide evidence- and experience-based tips and techniques for performing humane euthanasia in clinical practice.
