Description
Ophthalmic diseases are a common presenting complaint for many patients in emergency rooms. Unfortunately, for many of our exotic animal patients, their eyes occupy a large percentage of their heads, leaving them more prone to injury and irritation than their canine and feline compatriots. Ocular disease can vary in severity, but in some cases, delays in treatment can lead to loss of vision or even the loss of an eye. The goal of this presentation is to review the clinical signs, diagnosis, and treatment of some of the more common ophthalmic emergencies: corneal ulcerations/lacerations, ocular perforation, glaucoma, proptosis, and dysecdysis.
