Name
Exotic Pet Abuse: Recognition and Action
Date & Time
Thursday, August 29, 2024, 11:00 AM - 11:55 AM
Cathy Johnson-Delaney
Description

Exotic pets are often a novelty when acquired, but one that wears off for many owners, especially if the animal was purchased for a child. While many owners may try to do the correct diet and husbandry at first, as interest wanes, care of the animal decreases. Neglect is the first stage including lack of veterinary care. Abuse incorporates severe neglect, but also tangible physical and behavioral attacks on the animals. Hoarding is part of the picture. Recognition, documentation, notification of authorities, and understanding of your laws and protection with a case will be discussed. Several case examples will be presented. All veterinarians should have a plan in place to address this.
