Description

Working with zoologic species can be a challenge for many reasons. First, there are more than 75,000 species of vertebrates that we may be asked to provide a consult, so developing a working knowledge of all these species is impossible. Second, there remains a dearth of evidence available to us regarding the captive management and medical/surgical care for these species. Finally, there is a general (subjective) acceptance that the internet is misleading. If we accept that “Dr Google” is incorrect, without pursuing the data provided, we will limit our ability to grow. The last point is important because we often use this tool for ourselves but assume others (e.g., clients) use it incorrectly. That can be dangerous because we may be using the resource in a similar manner without understanding our limitations. The purpose of this masterclass is to review the epidemiologic tools that are available to us to gain the most out of the data provided to us through the internet, textbooks, and the evidence-based literature (case reports and series, experimental and non-experimental research). Understanding the limitations of each of these sources of knowledge will ensure we gain the most from them to build a solid foundation of knowledge.
