Ileus, a common digestive problem often associated with low-fiber diets can be fatal in rabbits. Current treatment of ileus, however, shows some limitations, potential adverse effects, and questionable therapeutic effects, thus suggesting alternative management. Herbal formula, proven to treat ileus successfully in some animals, is studied little in rabbits. Therefore, this cross-over study aimed to evaluate the effects of a novel herbal formula in ileus rabbits by using non-invasive methods. Nine New Zealand White Rabbits underwent three stages: healthy, ileus, and herbal formula management. The ileus stage was induced by 100% pellet diet which remained through the herbal stage (0.15 g/kg/day, SID, PO, 2 weeks). Gastrointestinal (GI) contrast study with a novel scoring system, fecal analysis, and physical examination were used to compare the differences in GI motility among three stages. The results showed shortened GI transit time in the herbal stage compared to the ileus stage based on radiographs and decrased GI transit assessment scores (34.44 ± 3.44 → 31.33 ± 3.77). Besides, fecal amount (23.22 ± 11.74 → 40.94 ± 10.45 gram/day), fecal size (0.98 ± 0.06 → 1.12 ± 0.11 cm), better fecal morphology, and increased GI sound (2.0 ± 0.5 → 3.8 ± 0.7 per minute) significantly increased after herbal management. Although GI motility and fecal condition cannot return to the normal level, herbal formula can still alleviate ileus in rabbits partially and can provide more time for veterinarians in clinics to investigate underlying problems that cause ileus.
