Potbellied pigs are an increasingly popular pet in both rural and urban settings. Veterinary care for these pets is difficult to find, as this species can be time-consuming to see in a clinic unfamiliar with pigs. Exotic species veterinarians situated in regions lacking in large animal veterinary care are often called upon to treat pigs. However, companion porcine medicine is not routinely taught in veterinary schools nor is it a major topic covered during exotics training programs. Potbellied pigs were first imported to the USA in the late 1980’s; their popularity as pets has since grown exponentially. Expectations for veterinary care have subsequently increased as most pigs are considered a family member who sleeps in the home and eats a high-quality diet. Seeing pigs in practice can be a daunting task; however, an increased demand for “gold standard” care over “farm-call” care has created a need for more veterinarians willing to treat these patients in private practice. In this presentation, I will discuss the following: general restraint and fear free handling of pigs, essential equipment to have on hand, general wellness care, and how to recognize and treat common diseases (skin issues, dental/hoof prophylactic care, gastrointestinal disorders). Seeing pigs routinely in your clinic will open you to an entirely new clientele in your area. Providing this care can be easy with the proper equipment and staff willing to learn about the exciting world of companion porcine medicine.
