Rabbits, as the third most popular mammal, present unique challenges for general practitioners, many of whom may not feel fully equipped to address common rabbit emergencies. This masterclass aims to provide an in-depth exploration of evidence-based diagnosis and management strategies for prevalent clinical cases encountered in general practice. The session commences with an examination of the author's triage examination method and an exploration of contemporary pain scales. Foundational techniques, including venipuncture, IV/IO catheters, and an overview of diagnostic tools (CBC/Chem/rads/lactate), are presented. The course structure systematically delves into specific body systems. The discussion on gastrointestinal diseases covers common differentials within the realm of Rabbit Gastrointestinal Syndrome (RGIS), encompassing conditions such as intestinal obstruction (including stomach decompression), liver lobe torsion, appendicitis, and disorders mimicking diarrhea. The subsequent segment focuses on ocular emergencies, including glaucoma, dacryocystitis, and corneal ulceration. An overview of respiratory system disorders follows, elucidating conditions like rhinitis, pneumonia, thymoma, and cardiac disease. The exploration of the neurological system places particular emphasis on central versus peripheral vestibular disease, fractures, and seizures. The course concludes with an examination of dental diseases, incorporating the essential component of dental radiographs. This masterclass offers an overview of critical rabbit emergencies, providing general practitioners with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate and manage these challenging cases in their daily practice.
